Upper Mustang Trek – 12 Days

Enjoy an exciting journey through the hidden trails of the Tsum Valley, surrounded by majestic Himalayan peaks, ancient monasteries, and the rich culture of the sacred “Valley of Happiness.

Upper Mustang Trek Overview

Upper Mustang, often referred to as the “Last Forbidden Kingdom,” is one of Nepal’s most culturally preserved and geographically unique regions. Nestled in the rain shadow of the Dhaulagiri and Annapurna ranges, it remained restricted to outsiders until 1992, allowing its ancient Tibetan traditions, language, and lifestyle to remain remarkably intact. The region’s centerpiece is the walled city of Lo Manthang, a medieval settlement filled with centuries-old monasteries, whitewashed mud-brick houses, and royal palaces that still echo the legacy of the former Mustang kings. Unlike the lush greenery typical of other Himalayan treks, Upper Mustang presents a stark, desert-like landscape marked by dramatic cliffs, deep canyons, and colorful rock formations that resemble the Tibetan plateau more than central Nepal.

The trek to Upper Mustang typically begins with a flight from Pokhara to Jomsom, followed by a journey through ancient villages like Kagbeni, Chele, and Tsarang, before reaching Lo Manthang. Along the way, trekkers encounter cave dwellings carved into cliffs, monasteries adorned with sacred art, and local communities that continue to practice Tibetan Buddhism and the ancient Bon religion. Because it is a restricted area, special permits are required—costing $500 per person for the first 10 days—and trekking here must be done with a registered guide and in a group. Despite its remoteness, accommodation is available in basic teahouses that offer simple meals and warm hospitality.

Upper Mustang is one of the few places in Nepal that is ideal for monsoon trekking due to its arid climate. It is also home to unique festivals such as Tiji, a three-day celebration held annually in Lo Manthang that features traditional masked dances and rituals believed to drive away evil spirits. Trekking in Upper Mustang is not just an adventure through a stunning Himalayan landscape—it is a journey into a living museum of Tibetan heritage, offering rare insight into a way of life that has remained untouched by modern influences for centuries.

Packing List

For a comfortable and successful trek, having the right clothing, gear, and equipment is essential. One porter will be assigned for every two trekkers, with a maximum carrying capacity of 18 kg. This means each trekker is allowed to bring up to 9 kg of personal luggage.

As the porter will carry gear for two people, we recommend coordinating with a trekking partner and packing both sets of gear in a single duffel bag of at least 60 liters. In addition, each trekker should carry a personal daypack (20–30 liters) for essentials such as valuables, snacks, water, and important documents.

While personal preferences may vary, we suggest bringing only the necessary clothing and accessories for the trek. Any extra luggage you don’t need on the trail can be safely stored at your hotel or at the Discovery World Trekking office free of charge during the trek.
