Upper Mustang Trek Overview

Upper Mustang, often referred to as the “Last Forbidden Kingdom,” is one of Nepal’s most culturally preserved and geographically unique regions. Nestled in the rain shadow of the Dhaulagiri and Annapurna ranges, it remained restricted to outsiders until 1992, allowing its ancient Tibetan traditions, language, and lifestyle to remain remarkably intact. The region’s centerpiece is the walled city of Lo Manthang, a medieval settlement filled with centuries-old monasteries, whitewashed mud-brick houses, and royal palaces that still echo the legacy of the former Mustang kings. Unlike the lush greenery typical of other Himalayan treks, Upper Mustang presents a stark, desert-like landscape marked by dramatic cliffs, deep canyons, and colorful rock formations that resemble the Tibetan plateau more than central Nepal.

The trek to Upper Mustang typically begins with a flight from Pokhara to Jomsom, followed by a journey through ancient villages like Kagbeni, Chele, and Tsarang, before reaching Lo Manthang. Along the way, trekkers encounter cave dwellings carved into cliffs, monasteries adorned with sacred art, and local communities that continue to practice Tibetan Buddhism and the ancient Bon religion. Because it is a restricted area, special permits are required—costing $500 per person for the first 10 days—and trekking here must be done with a registered guide and in a group. Despite its remoteness, accommodation is available in basic teahouses that offer simple meals and warm hospitality.

Upper Mustang is one of the few places in Nepal that is ideal for monsoon trekking due to its arid climate. It is also home to unique festivals such as Tiji, a three-day celebration held annually in Lo Manthang that features traditional masked dances and rituals believed to drive away evil spirits. Trekking in Upper Mustang is not just an adventure through a stunning Himalayan landscape—it is a journey into a living museum of Tibetan heritage, offering rare insight into a way of life that has remained untouched by modern influences for centuries.

Upper Mustang Trek Itinerary

Elevation: 1400 m → 150 m

Begin your Upper Mustang adventure with a scenic flight from Kathmandu to Pokhara, a journey that takes approximately 25 minutes and offers breathtaking views of the Himalayan ranges, including Langtang, Manaslu, and the Annapurnas. As you descend, the lush hills and tranquil lakes of Pokhara come into view—welcoming you to one of Nepal’s most beautiful and peaceful cities.

Upon arrival at Pokhara Airport, you’ll be transferred to your hotel located near Lakeside, a vibrant area filled with cozy cafés, local shops, and restaurants. Spend the day exploring the relaxing surroundings of Pokhara. You can enjoy a peaceful boat ride on Phewa Lake, visit the famous Tal Barahi Temple situated on a small island in the lake, or take a short hike to the World Peace Pagoda for panoramic views of the Annapurna range. If you prefer to stay in town, stroll along the lakeside promenade and immerse yourself in the relaxed atmosphere that Pokhara is known for.

This overnight stay in Pokhara not only provides a chance to unwind after your flight but also serves as an important acclimatization stop before heading to higher altitudes. Enjoy a comfortable night’s rest, savoring the fresh mountain air and the anticipation of the remarkable journey into Upper Mustang that lies ahead.

Elevation: 150 m → 2700 m → 2858 m

Your day begins with a breathtaking early morning flight from Pokhara to Jomsom, the administrative center of Mustang District, located at an altitude of 2,700 meters. The 20-minute flight offers spectacular aerial views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges, as well as the world’s deepest gorge—the Kali Gandaki Valley. Flying through this high mountain corridor is an unforgettable experience, as the plane navigates between towering peaks and over barren, windswept terrain. Upon landing at Jomsom Airport, you’ll immediately notice the dry and windy climate characteristic of the trans-Himalayan region.

After a brief rest and some final preparations, your Upper Mustang trek officially begins. The trail from Jomsom follows the Kali Gandaki River upstream through a wide, barren valley surrounded by rocky cliffs and desert-like landscapes. As you walk, you’ll pass through quaint villages and witness local life rooted in Tibetan culture, with flat-roofed stone houses, chortens (Buddhist shrines), and fluttering prayer flags lining the path.

After approximately 3 hours of gentle trekking, you’ll reach the village of Kagbeni (2,900m), a charming settlement that marks the official gateway to Upper Mustang. Kagbeni is a fascinating place where old Tibetan traditions are still preserved. Its narrow alleys, red-walled monastery, and ancient mud-brick houses offer a glimpse into a bygone era. From here, you can also see the confluence of the Kali Gandaki and Jhong rivers, and on clear days, get a glimpse of the mysterious land that lies ahead.

You’ll spend the night in Kagbeni, resting and acclimatizing before entering the restricted area of Upper Mustang. This small village, steeped in history and culture, sets the perfect tone for the journey into one of Nepal’s most remote and mystical regions.

Elevation: 2804 m → 3475 m

After a restful night in the ancient village of Kagbeni, your journey into the heart of Upper Mustang continues. Instead of trekking, the next two stages—from Kagbeni to Chele and Chele to Sangbachen—will be covered by private jeep, allowing you to conserve energy while still experiencing the dramatic landscapes and remote villages of the region.

From Kagbeni, begin your off-road drive along the rugged trails that trace the course of the Kali Gandaki River. As you ascend through the windswept canyons and sandy plateaus, you’ll pass Tangbe, a picturesque village known for its whitewashed houses and narrow alleys, and Chhusang, where the terrain becomes more rugged and dry. After crossing a steel bridge over the Kali Gandaki, you’ll reach Chele (3,050m)—the traditional entry point into Upper Mustang’s deeper cultural heartland.

Continuing further, the drive becomes steeper and more adventurous, winding through narrow mountain roads and high passes. As the altitude increases, you’ll be rewarded with sweeping views of barren cliffs, red rock formations, and scattered cave dwellings carved into the hillsides. The route climbs gradually past Samar and Bhena, before arriving at Sangbachen (also spelled Syangboche or Shyangmochen), located at 3,930 meters above sea level.

Reaching Sangbachen by vehicle gives you a unique opportunity to cover a significant distance quickly while still enjoying the high-altitude environment and traditional Mustang villages. The drive—lasting around 4 hours total—offers ever-changing vistas and insights into the harsh yet beautiful lifestyle of the Himalayan plateau. You’ll settle in for the night at a local teahouse in Sangbachen, preparing for the next leg of your adventure into the timeless kingdom of Lo.

Elevation: 3475 m → 3520 m

The trek from Sangbachen (also known as Syangboche) to Ghami Village is one of the more scenic and challenging days of the Upper Mustang journey, covering approximately 9.3 kilometers (5.7 miles) through a rugged, high-altitude landscape. This section of the trail is filled with dramatic passes, sweeping views, and cultural highlights that showcase the raw beauty of Mustang.

Leaving Sangbachen, the trail begins with an ascent to the first of the day’s three mountain passes — Syangboche La (3,930m). From here, trekkers are treated to panoramic vistas of the surrounding barren hills and far-off peaks. The trail then continues upward to reach the Nyi La Pass (4,050m), one of the highest points on the trek. The views from this vantage point are truly breathtaking, revealing the vast, wind-eroded terrain that defines the Upper Mustang region.

After Nyi La, the trail descends and ascends once more to cross the Ghami La Pass (3,560m) before making the final descent into Ghami Village. The constant ups and downs over the passes make this day moderately strenuous, requiring good physical stamina and acclimatization. However, the rewards are equally rich—offering a deep sense of immersion into Mustang’s ancient trade route trails and captivating desert-like scenery.

Upon arrival in Ghami, the third-largest village in Upper Mustang, you’ll notice its cluster of traditional stone houses, a red-walled monastery, and the presence of one of the longest Mani walls (Buddhist prayer walls) in Nepal. The village sits beside a river and is surrounded by rugged cliffs and terraced fields, providing a peaceful atmosphere for a well-earned rest. This day not only tests your trekking spirit but also delivers some of the most iconic views and spiritual elements of the entire Mustang experience.

Elevation: 3520 m → 3500 m

Leaving the village of Ghami, the trail initially descends slightly before a gentle ascent, taking about 45 minutes to reach the valley of Dhakmar. This area is famous for its spectacular, vividly colored cliffs and numerous ancient cave dwellings carved into the rock faces above the village. These caves were historically used by monks for meditation and by locals as shelter, giving the landscape a mysterious and timeless atmosphere.

From Dhakmar, the trail climbs towards the Mui La Pass (4,170m). This high pass is known not only for its panoramic views but also as a habitat for the elusive blue sheep (bharal), which trekkers may be lucky enough to spot during the ascent. The wildlife and the dramatic geological formations make this section particularly memorable.

After crossing the pass, you’ll visit Ghar Gompa, one of Nepal’s oldest monasteries. This sacred site predates even the famed Samye Monastery in Lhasa, Tibet, and belongs to the Nyingmapa sect of Tibetan Buddhism. Ghar Gompa is renowned for housing hidden scriptures attributed to Padmasambhava, the legendary Buddhist master who is said to have brought Buddhism to Tibet. The monastery’s ancient walls and spiritual ambiance offer a deep connection to Mustang’s rich religious heritage.

From Ghar Gompa, the trail follows the Tsarang Khola stream through the small settlement of Lo Ghekar before finally reaching Charang Village at about 3,570 meters. Charang is another ancient village with traditional stone houses, a large monastery, and beautiful views of the surrounding Mustang landscape. This stretch combines natural beauty, wildlife spotting, and cultural exploration, making it a rewarding day on the Upper Mustang trek.

Elevation: 3500 m → 3700 m

Departing from Charang, the trail first descends gently to cross the Charang River, before beginning a steady, gradual climb through a scenic valley. The path winds slowly upward through the rugged desert landscape characteristic of Upper Mustang, with its unique mix of barren hills, colorful cliffs, and sparse vegetation.

As you approach Lo Manthang, the ancient walled city and the cultural heart of Upper Mustang, you’ll be treated to stunning views of the south face of Nilgiri Himal (6,940 meters) towering majestically in the distance. This dramatic Himalayan backdrop contrasts beautifully with the arid Trans-Himalayan terrain underfoot.

Continuing onward, the trail passes through sandy plains and rocky outcrops before finally entering the historic walled city of Lo Manthang, founded in the 15th century as the capital of the former Mustang Kingdom. The city’s fortified walls, traditional mud-brick houses, and narrow alleys evoke a sense of stepping back in time. Lo Manthang is rich in Tibetan Buddhist culture, with several ancient monasteries, royal palaces, and vibrant local markets, making it the highlight and spiritual center of the Upper Mustang trek.

Reaching Lo Manthang marks the culmination of the trek’s remote journey into one of Nepal’s most preserved cultural landscapes, offering a rare glimpse into a centuries-old kingdom nestled in the shadows of the Himalayas.

Elevation: 3700 m

Today is dedicated to exploring the rich cultural and historical treasures of Upper Mustang, centered around the ancient walled city of Lo Manthang. After days of trekking through breathtaking landscapes, you have the opportunity to immerse yourself in the unique heritage of this remote kingdom, choosing from a variety of fascinating activities tailored to your interests.

Here are some of the popular options for your exploration day:

  1. Visit the Mysterious Chossar Caves
Take a horse or jeep ride to the nearby Chossar Caves, ancient cliffside dwellings carved into the rock. These caves were once used for meditation, burial chambers, and refuge, offering a glimpse into the spiritual and practical life of Mustang’s early inhabitants.

  2. Lo Manthang Village Tour
Wander through the narrow streets of Lo Manthang and visit its important landmarks, including three historic monasteries and the Jigmi Prabal Bista Palace (Royal Palace). This palace, once the residence of Mustang’s kings, stands as a testament to the city’s royal heritage and architectural beauty.

  3. Visit the Korala Border (Tibet Border)
Venture to the Korala Pass, the high-altitude border between Nepal and Tibet, accessible by horse or jeep. This crossing point offers spectacular views and a rare chance to witness the meeting place of two ancient cultures.

  4. Tour of Namgyal Monastery
Explore the spiritual heart of Lo Manthang at the Namgyal Monastery, where you can observe traditional Buddhist rituals, admire ancient murals, and soak in the peaceful atmosphere.

Lo Manthang’s long isolation from the outside world has helped preserve its rich cultural, religious, and architectural heritage, making it one of the most well-preserved historical areas in the world. Whether you choose to explore sacred monasteries, ancient caves, royal palaces, or the rugged borderlands, today’s journey offers a captivating window into Mustang’s timeless legacy.

In the evening, you will return to your comfortable accommodation in Lo Manthang to rest and reflect on the day’s discoveries.

Elevation: 3700 m → 3650 m

Starting your trek from Lo Manthang, the journey today leads southward through some of Upper Mustang’s most captivating landscapes and cultural sites. Early on, you’ll pass by the striking cliff-top monasteries of Luri Village, perched dramatically on rugged ridges overlooking the valleys below. These ancient religious sites offer a glimpse into the deep spiritual traditions that have shaped this region.

The trail then follows a dusty off-road path ascending to the Lo La Pass (3,950 meters). From this vantage point, you’ll enjoy one of the last panoramic views of the walled city of Lo Manthang, framed by the vast arid terrain of Mustang’s Trans-Himalayan desert.

Descending from Lo La, the landscape shifts to rugged ridges and barren valleys, revealing the stark beauty of this high-altitude desert. Next, you’ll cross the Dhi La Pass, also at about 3,950 meters, before arriving at Dhi Village, known for its vibrant orange-painted gompa (monastery), which stands as a bright beacon amid the earthy tones of the landscape.

Continuing onward, the trek leads through the village of Surkhang and a valley dotted with numerous ancient caves carved into the cliffs—silent witnesses to centuries of monastic meditation and local life. Finally, you will reach the picturesque village of Yara Ghara (3,820 meters), nestled in the shadow of the Damodar Himal mountain range.

Yara Ghara is the last major village before the trek ascends into the higher passes of the Damodar Himal region. This tranquil village, surrounded by dramatic cliffs and open skies, provides a peaceful overnight stop, offering a chance to rest and prepare for the challenging high-altitude trekking ahead.

Elevation: 3650 m

Rest Day and Visit to Luri Gomba 3940 m

Elevation: 3650 m → 3240 m

Before leaving Yara Ghara, start your day with a peaceful breakfast overlooking the stunning surroundings, soaking in the tranquility of Mustang’s high desert. As you continue your trek, the path gradually descends through a series of small tributary streams, leading you toward the banks of the Kali Gandaki River, one of the most sacred rivers in Nepal and famous for its unique shaligram fossils—spiral-shaped ammonite fossils revered in Hinduism as symbols of Lord Vishnu.

Along the way, you’ll pass by a stream that flows from the holy Damodar Kund, a sacred lake known for its religious significance and believed to have healing powers. The trek here combines gentle uphill and downhill sections, providing breathtaking views of the arid Mustang landscape framed by distant snow-capped Himalayan peaks.

Your day’s destination is Tangge Village (3,240 meters), a charming and traditional settlement of about 30 closely connected households. The houses in Tangge are notable for their dry wood roofs, ingeniously designed to protect residents from the region’s harsh cold temperatures. Surrounding the village, you’ll find numerous mani walls (Buddhist prayer walls) and chortens (stupas), symbols of the strong Tibetan Buddhist faith that shapes daily life here.

Tangge is also known for its pastoral lifestyle, and you may see Mustang horses grazing peacefully in the nearby pastures, adding to the village’s timeless charm. The combination of cultural richness, natural beauty, and traditional architecture makes Tangge an unforgettable stop on the Upper Mustang trek.

Elevation: 3240 m → 2980 m

Today’s trek takes you through the scenic Kali Gandaki River basin, offering a mix of natural beauty and challenging terrain over a long day of hiking. After leaving Tangge, you will cross a suspension bridge spanning the Kali Gandaki River, which marks a key point as you move to the opposite riverbank. The trail continues steadily towards Tetang, a small settlement along the way.

The most demanding part of the day is the ascent to the Paha La Pass, which rises to an elevation of 4,218 meters. The climb to this pass takes about three hours and rewards trekkers with breathtaking panoramic views of some of the highest peaks in the region, including the Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, and Damodar ranges. From the top, the vast Himalayan panorama stretches as far as the eye can see, creating an unforgettable highlight on the journey.

This stretch of the trail is very isolated, with no lodges or restaurants available, so you’ll carry a packed lunch to enjoy in a scenic spot surrounded by towering mountains. The views of the majestic Dhaulagiri, Tukuche, and Nilgiri peaks will captivate you throughout much of this segment.

After descending from the pass, you will reach the quaint village of Chhusang in the evening, where you will spend the night. Chhusang is a traditional village characterized by its stone houses and dramatic cliffs, providing a peaceful end to a long but rewarding day of trekking in Upper Mustang.

Elevation: 2980 m → 2858 m → 2700 m

After your stay in Chhusang, you will begin your return journey by vehicle, traveling along rugged mountain roads through the Kali Gandaki Valley. The drive from Chhusang to Kagbeni is a scenic ride that takes you past dramatic cliffs, traditional villages, and terraced fields, retracing part of the trekking route through the heart of Mustang.

From Kagbeni, the journey continues by jeep or bus along the winding river valley to Jomsom, the administrative hub of Mustang and gateway to the region. This drive offers spectacular views of the towering Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges, as well as the deep gorge of the Kali Gandaki River, one of the world’s deepest valleys.

The vehicle ride from Chhusang to Jomsom via Kagbeni is faster and more comfortable than trekking, allowing you to relax and enjoy the landscape after days on foot. Upon arrival in Jomsom, you can rest before your onward flight or continue exploring this unique Himalayan region.

Elevation: 2700 m → 1400 m

After your memorable trek and exploration in Upper Mustang, your journey continues with a comfortable drive from Jomsom to Pokhara in a reserved private vehicle. This scenic road trip takes you through the stunning landscapes of the Kali Gandaki Valley, passing charming villages, terraced fields, and rugged mountain scenery.

The drive typically takes around 6 to 8 hours, depending on road conditions, and offers plenty of opportunities to stop and admire the breathtaking views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges. Traveling by private vehicle allows you to enjoy the journey at your own pace, with flexibility to rest or explore along the way.
