Himalaya Guiding Institute (P) Ltd – HGI Nepal

Himalaya Guiding Institute (P) Ltd – HGI Nepal was founded in 1985 by two visionary individuals, Shambu Tamang and Ringi Sherpa, who shared not only a passion for mountaineering but also a profound respect and love for the majestic Himalayas. What began as a small guiding company with a dream to connect people to the mountains has now grown into one of Nepal’s most trusted and respected adventure and trekking institutions, renowned for its professionalism, safety standards, and eco-conscious approach.

Shambu Tamang, a legendary Nepalese mountaineer, made history on May 5, 1973, when he reached the summit of Mount Everest at just 19 years old—earning him a place in the Guinness World Records as the youngest person to conquer the world’s highest peak. His extraordinary feat not only brought pride to Nepal but also ignited his lifelong mission to promote mountaineering and adventure tourism in the Himalayas. With decades of field experience, Shambu Tamang’s leadership, knowledge, and passion for the mountains have been central to shaping HGI Nepal’s core values—safety, integrity, environmental responsibility, and cultural respect. His legacy continues to inspire both local guides and international adventurers who seek authentic Himalayan experiences.

Ringi Sherpa, co-founder of HGI Nepal, has been equally instrumental in the company’s success. Having entered the tourism industry in 1988, Ringi Sherpa initially worked as a manager for In Wilderness Trekking from 1988 to 1997, where he developed a deep understanding of Nepal’s trekking and expedition landscape. From 1997 to 2008, he served as the Managing Director of Sea to Summit Trekking, gaining extensive managerial and operational expertise. With a Master’s degree in Commerce, his academic background complements his practical experience in tourism management. Moreover, his work as a Peace Corps volunteer with an international NGO highlights his commitment to community development, education, and sustainable tourism practices—principles that remain at the heart of HGI Nepal’s operations.

In its early years, the company underwent several transformations, reflecting its founders’ evolving vision and pursuit of excellence. Originally known as Wilderness Trekking, it was later rebranded as Sea to Summit Trekking before adopting its current and enduring name—Himalaya Guiding Institute (P) Ltd. This name embodies the company’s dedication to guiding adventurers through the Himalayan region while upholding the highest standards of safety, environmental stewardship, and professionalism.

Over nearly four decades, HGI Nepal has built a stellar reputation as a pioneer in responsible trekking, mountaineering, and eco-tourism in Nepal. The company’s strength lies in its team of highly experienced, government-licensed, and environmentally conscious guides, many of whom hail from the Sherpa community—the guardians of Himalayan mountaineering heritage. Their deep local knowledge, technical expertise, and warm hospitality ensure that every journey with HGI Nepal is not just a trip but a life-changing experience.

The company places a strong emphasis on eco-friendly and sustainable travel practices, encouraging trekkers to travel responsibly, respect local traditions, and minimize their environmental impact. HGI Nepal supports various community-based initiatives, including educational projects, reforestation programs, and cultural preservation efforts in remote Himalayan regions.

Today, Himalaya Guiding Institute (HGI Nepal) proudly stands as a symbol of Nepalese mountaineering excellence and sustainable adventure tourism. Whether guiding trekkers through the serene trails of the Annapurna and Everest regions or leading mountaineers to the challenging summits of the Himalayas, HGI Nepal continues to embody the spirit of adventure with compassion, care, and deep respect for nature.
